Barber Half Dollar

Not all coins these days have an interesting history attached to them. Some, though, have a very unique history, tying into myths, legends and stories. It is these coins, both rare and more valuable, that keep coin collectors interested in coin collecting. Coin collecting is a saga with so much behind a little piece of stamped metal. The history behind the Barber Half Dollar is not so much full of mystery as it is detailing a nation in the transition of change. The Barber Half Dollar history is, by and large, a story about one man who changed the face of a coinage long over due.

In 1892, things were happening so fast. It seemed that change was the only static thing going on in America. Over the next couple decades, people saw the world become smaller and going more global—as much as today, in fact. At any rate, there were three new coins that hit the public’s eye all at once. The dime, the quarter and the half dollar were put into circulation. The larger and more valuable of the coins goes by several names: the Liberty Head Half Dollar, the Barber Liberty Half Dollar or more commonly named after US chief mint engraver and sculptor, Charles E. Barber. Barber designed something not too many others could.

As mentioned, the US coinage was in need of a nip and tuck. People had been trading, using and staring at the seated liberty design for nearly fifty years. During the 1880s, the US mint struck really no new coins, as the vaults held enough coins to keep public consumerism at bay. There really wasn’t a need to strike any more coins. The people in charge knew it was time for change, not necessarily time for something better. They did a lot to encourage people to get involved and help in this time of transition.

Mint Director James P. Kimball stated in his annual report that a design change was much needed. In 1890, the treasury invited ten then well known artists to draw up designs for the new coins. Rather than complete work for free, the artists decided on a set of terms and thus presented them to the treasury office. They wanted $100 USD for sketches and $500 for completed models. That didn’t go over very well, so the treasury held the contest open to the public. Though 300 people turned in designs, none seemed suitable. Barber had wanted the job all along, but now it was the treasury that asked him for a design. His artwork was found suitable and won the mint’s affection in the end.

Barber’s design is of the Liberty Head with hair in a bonnet like cap. A wreath is tied around her head and the front reads LIBERTY in all big letters. There are thirteen stars around the outside of the coin split in two by the date. The top of the coin reads “In God We Trust.” The reverse of the coin has the heralded eagle holding olive branches and arrows. There are thirteen stars above its head and a ribbon in its mouth. A shield protects the eagle’s breast with United States of America wrapped around the upper half. The design evokes tradition, history with a twist of newness. Change was the word of the day and the Barber Half Dollar (among his other coins) depicted this. Over the next quarter decade, over 136 million Barber Half Dollar coins were struck. All three of his coins, however, debuted in 1892 for the first time and had a steady history of production.
