Seated Liberty Half Dollar

The Seated Liberty Half Dollar is much like the half-dime, dime, quarter, twenty-cent piece, and silver dollar that illustrated America’s Lady Liberty. Though the obverse and reverse sides of the coins did have some tailoring over the years, the design stayed the same from 1836 till 1891. The Seated Liberty Design and half dollar were minted in several mints across the US: the main one was in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City and San Francisco. Christian Gobrecht designed the Seated Liberty Half Dollar.

Mr. Gobrecht came up with the seated liberty on his own accord, but not until after working with the trade coins that were used primarily (legally any ways) in the Orient. His design is heralded as an icon of not only coinage but of the stand the US played in the global world. The obverse side or front of the coin includes Lady Liberty’s entire body, not just the head as was later illustrated in the Barber Half Dollar for example. Gobrecht’s Lady Liberty was clad in a velvet-like robe that covered her legs but not her arms (this was done some time later). There are thirteen stars hovering over her and a shield in her right hand. She holds a pole and liberty cap with the other. The other side shows the famous heralded eagle, protected by the union shield with olive branches and arrows held tightly in his talons. It wasn’t until 1866 that the ribbon and “In God We Trust” motif was added to the eagle’s clenched beak on the back.

The Seated Liberty Half Dollar had its own evolution to fruition. Before the famous seated liberty design, the dollar coin had used some of these same ideas. The only difference was it had Gobrecht’s name written on a strip of ribbon. The Gobrecht Dollar wasn’t very famous and only a couple thousand were actually minted. The coins are today very rare and worth quite a bit on the open market. In 1870, more Gobrecht dollars were struck, but then later done away with entirely. These are often worth more than the originals, as they are fewer in number still. The Seated Liberty design and Seated Liberty Half dollar replaced the Gobrecht Dollar before too many people got their hands on them. Coin collectors are very proud if they have one of these very unique specimens from the very inventor of the Seated Liberty diagram.

The Seated Liberty Half Dollar was struck in one of four mints across the US at the time: These include Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco and Carson City. Today, there is even a Seated Liberty Collector’s Club where members collect variations of the Seated Liberty Half Dollar among other Seated Liberty coins. Some collectors go for similar dates or position of dates; others, however, strive for repunched mintmarks to other unique coin features. The coins don’t have to be perfect in this instance to be valuable. The collector finds his or her intrigue in the fact that s/he has something very unique and therefore unforgettable.
